League: National Professional Soccer League
History: Considered the premier territory for the future of pro soccer in the US, both the NPSL and United Soccer Association placed teams in New York in 1967. The FIFA-sanctioned USA club was owned by Madison Square Garden. The C.A. Cerro club from Montevideo, Uruguay were imported to be the New York Skyliners. However, the USA's rival, the outlaw NPSL, had the national television contract, and the Generals were the more successful of the two Gotham teams, both of which played at Yankee Stadium. Generals player Gordon Bradley went on to become the first coach of the New York Cosmos in 1971.
