Butte Colored Giants
The Butte Colored Giants were trailblazers in that years before Jackie Robinson broke the organized baseball “color barrier” they joined otherwise all-white leagues. In 1922 and ’23, they topped five clubs to win the Butte Independent League championship, and in 1935 they competed as the only black club in the Montana State League, which while not a member of the organized baseball structure, was the highest level of baseball in Montana.
