Chicago Shamrocks

The minor American Hockey Association decided to change its name to the AHL and go head-to-head with the NHL in the U.S. The Shamrocks thus competed directly with the Chicago Blackhawks for the affections of the Windy City's hockey fans. After two years of fighting tough tactics by the NHL, including banishment of AHL players, the league retreated and reverted to minor league status, again taking the AHA name.
