Red Grange, "The Galloping Ghost" signed with the Chicago Bears immediately after his college career with the University of Illinois. In 1925, George Halas took Grange and the Bears on a nationwide tour, which was widely credited with legitimizing professional football in the U.S. (the collegiate game being considered much more significant at that time). When Grange's manager C.C. Pyle was denied an NFL franchise in New York, he started the first American Football League, with Grange as the star.
