History: Art "Superman" Pennington was a star in the Negro leagues. He could play every position except pitcher and catcher, and when Jorge Pascual tried to jump-start his Mexican League by signing top American talent, Pennington played alongside and against major leaguers like Sal Maglie and Mickey Owen, who had jumped to the Mexican League in pursuit of higher salaries. After the integration of baseball in the U.S., Pennington played for the minor league affiliates of the Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees, however he reputedly did not get a call-up to the big leagues because he was married to a white woman. After his baseball career Pennington settled in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he ran a restaurant and was active in local politics and the civil rights movement.
