PCL: Northern California
Northern California was home to four Pacific Coast League teams. The Sacramento Solons/Senators represented the state’s capitol, while Bay Area fans had three teams to call their own: the Oakland Oaks played at Oaks Park in Emeryville, while San Francisco had the Seals and Missions both playing at Seals Stadium.
PCL: Southern California
The Pacific Coast League featured Southern California teams in Los Angeles and San Diego, the Vernon Tigers, and two different iterations of the Hollywood Stars. From celebrity ownership groups to legal alcohol sales and world class stadiums like Wrigley Field, Southern California’s PCL teams provided a look into the future of the game.
PCL: Pacific Northwest
Of course the Pacific Coast League stretched beyond California, extending up its namesake into the Pacific Northwest. With teams in Portland, Oregon, Seattle Washington and even a Canadian inclusion from Vancouver, B.C., the Pacific Northwest claimed 15 titles between the three teams with the Portland Beavers and Seattle Rainiers accounting for 14 of them.
PCL: Post-1957
The PCL underwent a shift after 1957 when several franchises were displaced by the LA Dodgers and San Francisco Giants. In their place the league added teams in Spokane, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, and perhaps most famously Hawaii. Some teams were returning to the league, while others were brand new additions, but they all expanded the reach of the PCL.
The Stadiums
All up and down the West Coast, Pacific Coast League teams played in majestic modern ballparks as they brought the Major League game to completely new audiences. From Vancouver and Seattle in the North all the way down to Los Angeles and San Diego, fans packed the stadiums to see their local teams take the field.
