Duluth Eskimos

The Eskimos started out as the Kelley Duluths, named after the Kelley hardware store. They became the Eskimos after losing the store sponsorship, and were led by colorful running back Ernie Nevers, who turned them into a traveling team. Although representing the city of Duluth, the Eskimos actually never played a game there again after 1926. After a few seasons in the NFL, the Eskimos reverted to being an independent team, finally moving to Orange, NJ in 1929 and becoming the Orange Tornados. The film "Leatherheads" with George Clooney was a fictionalized version of the Eskimos' exploits.
