History: Notre Dame's arch rival on the gridiron is the University of Southern California Trojans. The series began in 1926 and through the 1922 season, the Fighting Irish hold a 50-37-5 edge over USC. The winner of the annual game wins the coveted Jeweled Shillelagh, a wooden club decorated with emerald emblazoned shamrocks similar to what is seen on our cap (minus the emeralds!) and ruby-emblazoned Trojan warrior heads for USC.
