League: Independent Negro Leagues Team
History: The White Elephants are another example of how important Black entrepreneurship was to Negro Leagues baseball. Legendary musicians like Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong could perform at Denver's prestigious Brown Palace Hotel, but they couldn't stay there as guests. Black businessman A.H.W. Ross put them up at his Rossonian Hotel, which was located in Denver's Five Points neighborhood. Ross also owned the White Elephants, who mainly played against white semi-pro teams (unlike professional white baseball, semi-pro ball generally did not have rules against the participation of Black players).
