League: Quebec Provincial League
History: The Black Panthers were a team of African-American players from the Deep South who joined the Quebec Provincial League in 1936. The Provincial League was in and out of organized baseball over the years, and when it operated as an "outlaw" league Black players were able to participate. Officially-sanctioned minor leagues were still strictly segregated.
Interestingly, Montreal factored in the integration of white baseball twice: Jackie Robinson was assigned to the Royals in 1946 for one season before joining the Brooklyn Dodgers. But an earlier version of the Royals briefly integrated the Eastern Canada League when Charlie Calvert (also known as Charlie Culver) played six games for Montreal in May of 1922 before he was forced from the lineup.
The same Charlie Calvert managed the Black Panthers during their two seasons in the Provincial League.
