League: Collegiate Baseball
History: Before Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders, there was the legendary two sport phenom Dick Groat. Groat was an All-American in both baseball and basketball at Duke and the first to have his basketball jersey retired at the University. He was also the first player to be inducted to both the College Baseball and Basketball Halls of fames. Groat would go on to an illustrious pro baseball career earning All-Star honors 8 times, 2 World Series rings with the Pirates and Cardinals and a National League MVP in 1960. Groat played just one season in the NBA for the Fort Wayne Pistons. Pirates GM Branch Rickey advised Groat that he couldn't afford to have him risk injury playing basketball, and Groat chose to stick with baseball so he would not lose his bonus. Groat is one of just 13 players to have played in both the NBA and MLB.
