History: Expansion in the Major Leagues always causes ripples that are felt in the Minors as well. That was the case with the addition of the Montreal Expos, and nearly decade after they joined the Bigs they launched an expansion Double-A side in Memphis in 1978. A familiar name was chosen, a nod to the Memphis Chickasaws who used the âChicksâ as a nickname. Memphis would serve as an affiliate team of the Expos until 1983 when Avron Fogelman, the team owner, purchased a 49% stake in the Kansas City Royals and the Royals moved their Double-A affiliation to the Chicks in â84. The affiliation with the Royals would be their longest, stretching 11 years from â84 to â94, although hardly their most successful as they racked up a total record over that period of 759-814. The San Diego Padres stepped in for the â95 and â96 seasons before the Chicks spent their final season in â97 as an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. Following that final season the Memphis Redbirds of the Pacific Coast League came to town and the Chicks were relocated to Jackson, Tennessee and became the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx. Among those who represented the Memphis Chicks in one way or another, none stand taller than Bo Jackson, who appeared in 1986 while a member of the Royals farm system.
