History: Hiroshima established a professional baseball team as part of the city's reconstruction efforts after the atomic bomb devastation in 1945. The Carp ("Koi" in Japanese) were perennially underfunded, so much so that in 1951 the club almost disbanded. But Hiroshima fans rallied behind their team and collected donations to keep them afloat. In spite of their financial issues, the Carp persevered and made a full revival in recent years, winning three consecutive pennants in 2016–18.
