PAYING HOMAGE TO THE FAST-PITCH SOFTBALL GREATS THE SIOUX CITY GHOSTS
History: What started as a boys club in a historically Black neighborhood in Sioux City, Iowa evolved into a barnstorming fast-pitch softball team that toured all over the nation. The Sioux City Ghosts were both elite players and comedic performers, playing “shadowball,” embarrassing the umpires, or playing in slow-motion to get the crowd going. Along with teams like the Harlem Globetrotters, their skill and showmanship made them a top attraction during the Great Depression, and they earned a permanent spot in Sioux City’s history books.
The Ghosts used a few different versions of a skull and crossbones logo, including this one, taken from a vintage souvenir program given out at one of their exhibition games. This ballcap is made with a cotton twill body, a green satin underbrim, and a felt patch of the skull design worn by the Sioux City Ghosts.
