League: American Basketball League
History: When promoter Abe Saperstein did not get the Los Angeles NBA franchise he felt he was promised, he took revenge by starting his own league – the ABL. The league included the former New York Tuck Tapers, previously a company-sponsored team. (One George Steinbrenner owned the Cleveland Pipers franchise). The Tapers must have set some kind of record for franchise movement, calling three cities (Washington, Philadelphia, and New York) home in less than two years. Although the new league pioneered some innovations such as the 3-point play, it did not last two full seasons, and it wasn't until the ABA began play in 1967 that the NBA had viable competition.
