History: The Fighting Irish of 1955 finished their season with a record of 8-2. Their head Coach was 26 year old Terry Brennan in his second season after taking over for the legendary Frank Leahy and were led by senior team captain Ray Lemek and junior sensation, Paul Hornung. Lemek was a hard nosed offensive lineman who had a devastating knee injury in 1954 but battled back for the '55 campaign. Apparently Lemek was faster than some of the running backs on the team. Despite the Irish having a down year in 1956 (2-8), the "Golden Boy" Hornung would win the Heisman Trophy making him the only player in history from a losing team to do so. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team is currently an independent and no part of an NCAA conference. They play their home games in Notre Dame Stadium, South Bend, Indiana.
