History: The Stroh Brewery Company got its start in 1850 when Bernhard Stroh immigrated to the United States from what is now Germany and settled in Detroit, Michigan. Stroh came from a family tradition of brewers, and started producing a Bohemian-style pilsner upon his arrival. The business was passed through the Stroh family over the years with brothers Bernhard Jr. and Julius Stroh managing things through Prohibition, during which time a number of other products were produced as the company changed its name to the Stroh Products Company. Most of those products were left behind following Prohibition, but Stroh’s Ice Cream continued on alongside the return of the beer. As part of the company’s logo Stroh used a heraldic lion in gold on a red field, an emblem from the Kyrburg Castle, a famous landmark from Bernhard Stroh’s home.
