History: St. Nicholas Arena, at West 66th Street and Columbus Avenue, was one of New York’s first artificial ice arenas, and a home to hockey as early as 1896. Boxing was later added (the arena hosted over 10,000 matches during its years in use), and one of the last fights at St. Nicholas featured a young Cassius Clay (later Muhammad Ali), who stopped Billy Daniels in Round 7 by TKO on May 19, 1962. St. Nicholas was also an important venue in the development of rock & roll, as DJ Alan Freed held his first New York shows there in 1955, featuring Fats Domino, Big Joe Turner, and the Moonglows, among others.
