History: The Brown Bombers were an Army team formed by Black payers from New Orleans that arrived in Hawaii in the opening days of World War II. The US military was still segregated, but the Bombers were entered in the Fort Armstrong League and faced competition from white teams. The Bombers’ roster included Homestead Grays pitcher Sonny Boy Jeffries and St. Louis Stars first baseman Leo “Ace” Young. Thanks to Gary Bedingfield and his highly-recommended website “Baseball In Wartime” for bringing this team to our attention.
