League: Negro National League
History: The Crawfords had their origin as a sandlot team from the Hill District of Pittsburgh. Entrepreneur (and numbers runner) Gus Greenlee acquired the club in 1931 and named them after his Crawford Grill. The team was a charter member of the second Negro National League in 1933. By this time Greenlee had lured many of Black baseball’s top talent, including Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson, to his club. Greenlee was also NNL president, and awarded the pennant to his team, even though the Chicago American Giants disputed it.
