History: After six decades of two eight-team leagues, the first wave of MLB expansion came in 1961 when the American League added two clubs (the NL would follow the following year). But rather than add new cities, the AL chose to replace the Washington Senators, who had moved to Minnesota in 1960, and grab a piece of the lucrative new Southern California market that Walter O’Malley had to himself since relocating the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1958. The new AL team took the name of the historical Pacific Coast League club, and played their first year in the PCL team’s park, Wrigley Field. In 1962 the Angels moved into Dodger Stadium as a tenant of O’Malley’s until their own ballpark in Anaheim was ready in 1965, at which time the club became known as the California Angels.
