League: Collegiate
History: From 1970 to 1980 the Howard Bison soccer team was coached by Lincoln Phillips. Phillips was a footballer from Trinidad & Tobago who had already become the first Black professional soccer coach in U.S. history when he coached the Washington Darts in the American Soccer League in 1968. While coaching at Howard he twice led the team to the school's first national title. First in 1971, although that title was vacated by the NCAA for allegedly fielding ineligible players. Phillips and the Bison repeated the feat in 1974, and that title stuck after Howard beat St. Louis University 2-1 in quadruple overtime. Today the Bison soccer team plays home games in Washington, D.C. at Greene Stadium.
