League: Military Team

History: As the U.S. prepared to enter World War II, the ramp-up of manpower meant that many baseball players joined the war effort. One side effect was a swell of talent on military baseball teams around the country, with one of the best examples being the team at Fort Niagara. Led by pitcher and coach First Sgt. James Moody, Fort Niagara finished the ’41 season with a 43-5 record and claimed the titles of Courier-Express Suburban League and U.S. Army Second Corps Area Champions before also being named Inter Corps Area Champions after sweeping a best-of-three series against Fort Adams, the U.S. Army First Corps Area Champions from Newport, Rhode Island.

In 1942 Fort Niagara added World Series-winning former New York Yankee Steve Peek. The team won back-to-back league and regional Army championships during the height of their power. As part of the war effort Fort Niagara played exhibition games against a variety of opponents including Negro American League sides. They played twice against Satchel Paige and the Kansas City Monarchs, one of the best and most famous Negro League teams, with each team winning one game. The championship team ceased to exist in that form after 1942, as members of the team were discharged or transferred to other posts.
