History: We named the women's collection after the most powerful woman in baseball, Effa Manley. She is the first and only woman ever inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Effa was a uniquely powerful influence in growing and strengthening the Negro National League as co-owner of the Newark Eagles. Effa was an outspoken civil rights activist in Harlem well before her co-ownership of the Newark Eagles and a prominent member of the NAACP, eventually becoming treasurer of the Newark, NJ NAACP office. During her ownership of the Eagles, Effa received more than a little blow back from the other team owners who balked at her ideas and from those who thought she repeatedly over stepped her position. With a marketing savvy and business acumen unseen in the Leagues before Effa’s arrival, she pushed back in her ladylike way, eventually becoming the person responsible for establishing the precedent that the teams in the Negro Leagues get fair payment for players recruited into the Major Leagues after Jackie Robinson broke the color line. Her players loved her. The community loved her and Newark Eagles' games were the place to be. Effa Manley was a force of fairness to be reckoned with. Her results benefited all. We salute Effa Manley, honor her memory and are inspired by her every day.
