History: The Players' National League was formed when John Montgomery Ward, head of the Players' Brotherhood, led many of baseball's stars out of the National League in 1890. The league was an attempt to forge a more equitable relationship between players and management. The players specifically objected to the reserve clause, which bound a player to a club potentially for the life of his career. The league is considered "major" by baseball historians. Ward was player-manager for the Brooklyn entry.
