History: From 1933 to 1962 players from all across Negro League baseball took part in the East-West All-Star Game. Pittsburgh Crawfords owner Gus Greenlee came up with the idea, inspired by Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game, to feature the best Negro League players. Two major Black weekly newspapers, the Chicago Defender and the Pittsburgh Courier, tallied voting with fans additionally having the ability to choose the starting lineups for the two teams. With multiple leagues and independent teams, rather than having the teams determined by league they were instead determined by geographic location, hence the East vs. West nature of the contest.
