League: North American Soccer League
History: The Chiefs were the brainchild of Atlanta Braves’ vice president, Dick Cecil, who became enamored with soccer even though he had never seen a game. In 1968 the Chiefs moved over to the new North American Soccer League. In a season full of highlights, Atlanta defeated Manchester City 3-2 in a huge upset in an exhibition game. The shocked City team demanded a rematch, which Atlanta also won 2-1. The Chiefs topped off 1968 by defeating the San Diego Toros, to become the NASL’s first champion.
