Product Details

History: Alta Weiss was 16 years old when she was discovered by the Vermillion Independents in 1907 by way of Vermillion's town Mayor, H.P. Williiams. So impressed with her pitching skills Mayor Williams convinced Charles Heidloff, Vermillion's team manager, to give her a chance. Unconvinced, Heidloff arranged a pick up game between two mens teams in which Alta pitched. After her 15th strike out, Heidloff asked her to join the team. Immediately. Alta accepted and 1200 people turned out to see her debut. She gave up only 4 hits and one single in 5 innings. Her teammates dubbed her Girl Wonder. Alta's prowess soon filled the stands with fans. When she pitched a game, special trains would run to the ball park from Cleveland. Crowds of 3000+ regularly came out to watch her pitch 5 innings then play first base. Alta Weiss commanded as much money playing as the rest of her male teammates. She put herself through medial school with her earnings, the only girl in her graduating class of 1914. She went on to become a doctor, eventually taking over her fathers medical practice. Alta continued to play ball into the 1920s. She never played baseball with girls, always men. Early on and always, it was her father who saw her potential and fully encouraged it. So much so that he created a high school when she was a teenager, specifically so she could play baseball on an even playing field with her male peers. After her Minor League debut year, he purchased one half the shares of the Vermillion Independents, renaming it The Weiss All-Stars. They continued to play to large and enthusiastic crowds throughout Ohio and Kentucky.
