History: The Red Sox began play in 1921 as members of the Negro Southern League. They became a charter member of the Negro American League in 1937, playing home games at Martin Stadium and Russwood Field, home of the Southern Association's Memphis Chicks. Notable Red Sox players included African-American country & western singer Charley Pride, who pitched for Memphis in 1952, and later played for several years in the minor leagues. Memphis was one of the few Black clubs to survive MLB integration, hanging on until 1960.
