History: This menko card design is of one of Japanese baseball's first superstars, pitcher Victor Starrffin. Starrffin was the son of a Russian Imperial officer who had brought his family into Japan on transit visas. He joined the forerunner of the Tokyo Giants in 1936 and played with Tokyo until 1944. During World War II, he was forced to change his name to Suda Hiroshi, and he even spent time in a detention camp with other foreigners. Starrffin was Japan's first 300-game winner. He achieved that milestone while a member of the Tombow Unions. He was killed in a traffic accident in Tokyo in 1957. Starrffin became the first foreigner elected to the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame in 1960. (The spelling of Starffin's name varied within different Roman alphabets.)
