    History: Although the NFL's St. Louis Cardinals agreed to the University of Alabama's demand of $250,000 plus a Lincoln Continental to sign with them, Namath opted for the offer of $427,000 over three years by New York's fledgling AFL franchise. Broadway Joe's exciting play and flamboyant personality was a big part of the new league's gaining acceptance alongside their established rival. An even bigger part was Namath's "guarantee" of an upset over the heavily-favored Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III, a guarantee he made good on.
