History: Young George Herman Ruth was deemed "incorrigible" and was sent to St. Mary's Industrial School For Boys in 1902 at age 7. There he was mentored by Brother Matthias Boutlier, who encouraged young Ruth's interest in baseball. Ruth remained at St. Mary's until he was 18. By that time he had developed into an outstanding pitcher, as well as a powerful hitter. He signed his first professional contract with the Baltimore Orioles of the International League in 1913.
