History: The Brown Bears football team began play in 1878 and have captured 4 Ivy League titles in their history. One of the most famous names in all of College Football lore went to Brown; The namesake of the Heisman Trophy, John Heisman, was an offensive lineman for the Bruins in 1887 and 1888 before heading to Ivy League rival Penn where he graduated with a law degree. Another famous alumnus was College and NFL hall of Famer, Fritz Pollard. Pollard was the first African American player at Brown as well as one of the first two African Americans to play in the NFL when he suited up for the Akron Pros in 1920. The Brown Bears currently play in the NCAA Division 1 Football Championship Subdivision and are members of the 8 team Ivy league. They play their home games in Brown Stadium in Providence Rhode Island.
