League: National Basketball League
History: The previously amateur Gears joined the National Basketball League (forerunner to the NBA) in 1944. In 1946 they signed DePaul legend George Mikan, who led the Gears to the NBL title. Mikan was so impressive that American Gear Company owner Maurice Wright pulled the team out of the NBL and founded the Professional Basketball League of America, owning all the franchises. That league promptly folded, and Mikan ended up playing for the Minneapolis (later Los Angeles) Lakers. At 6’ 10”, Mikan was one of the first “big men” in pro basketball, and he dominated wherever he played. Mikan later became the first Commissioner of the ABA, and is credited with inventing that league’s famous red, white & blue ball.
