History: The Crawfords were originally a recreational team, but promoter Gus Greenlee turned them into the top contender in 1932 by signing the best talent in black baseball, including Satchel Paige and several members of the rival Homestead Grays and building his own ballpark, Greenlee Field, one of the few ballparks built specifically for a Negro leagues team.
