History: In 1947, spring training for the All American Girls Baseball League took place in Havana, Cuba. For 2 weeks they played in Gran Stadium de la Habana, drawing over 75,000 Cuban fans during an 8 game stretch. The Brooklyn Dodgers also trained there in 1947, specifically because Jackie Robinson had joined the team and the Dodger administration did not want to risk training in the south with him. On a weird, sad, side note, they still made Jackie stay in a different hotel than the rest of the team while in Cuba. The story goes that it was so as not to upset the rest of the team. Meanwhile, the AAGPBL exhibition games far out drew the Dodgers by the thousands. The experiemnt was so much of a success that a post season tour was arranged where two AAGPBL teams played as the Americanas. Cuba played as the Cubanas. Together they toured Guatemala,Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. Nine games in all played to an average of 7,000 enthusiastic fans per game. There were plans for more, but the costs were so much that it was deemed a drain on the rest of the AAGPBL so did not continue the next year.
