History: The Occidentals of Salt Lake City were one of the top black baseball outfits of the early 20th Century. After defeating almost all comers in the Salt Lake area, the team sought fresh competition in Los Angeles. They faced a select all-Japanese-American squad in 1909, and sought to join the integrated California Winter League. One of the most fascinating stories in baseball history is that of Occidentals pitcher Jimmy Claxton. Claxton briefly broke the organized baseball "color barrier" in 1914 when – posing as a Native American - he managed to appear in one game for the Oakland Oaks of the Pacific Coast League before his true racial background was revealed and he was fired.
