Newark Bears 1965 Football T-Shirt
Continental Football League
History: The Bears began as the Franklin (NJ) Miners in 1958, before moving to Paterson in 1962, where they played at Hinchliffe Stadium (currently being restored). Former Philadelphia Eagles star Steve Van Buren coached the team for three seasons. After being rejected for membership of the new AFL, Newark joined two other Atlantic Coast League teams as founding members of the ambitious Continental Football League in 1965. After three seasons in Newark, the franchise moved to Florida where they became the Orlando Panthers. The franchise won two championships in the ACFL and two in the CFL.
