Duluth Dukes 1949 T-Shirt
History: The first professional team to represent this northern Minnesota city was in 1886 in the Northwestern League. The first club to have the Dukes name was in 1935. A 1943 version of the Dukes played in baseball's only Class E league, the Twin Ports League, in 1943. All four teams were affiliated with the St. Louis Cardinals and played in Duluth or neighboring Superior, Wisconsin. The standout on the '49 Northern League team was shortstop Fred McAlister. McAlister later became a very successful scouting director for the Cardinals.
