Great Lakes Naval Station History

During World War II, many great pro ballplayers spent peak years of their careers in military service. The Great Lakes Naval Station, near Chicago, fielded some of the best military clubs. The 1942 team, managed by Lt. Mickey Cochrane regularly defeated minor and major league squads. With such stars as Johnny Mize, Bob Feller and Billy Herman, the team was loaded with both power and pitching.
