WOOL IS GOOD.There is a reason wool was used – either by itself or in combination with other yarns – for athletic clothing until the early 1970s. Wool is a natural fabric that has a great deal of strength and durability, yet is relatively light and comfortable. Many people, when they first find out baseball uniforms were made of wool flannel ask “weren’t these uniforms hot?” The short answer is: Not really. The modern polyester knit fabric that replaced wool flannel for baseball beginning in 1971 is certainly easier to care for – but it doesn’t breath, and we would argue that it is aesthetically far less pleasing, and certainly less traditional (Can you imagine The Babe trotting the bases in one of those form-fitting poly jobs?) Let’s face it, if you’re playing baseball and it’s 90 degrees with 90% humidity, you’re going to be hot, no matter if you’re wearing flannel or polyester. We’d pick the flannel any day. By the end of the flannel era, the fabric was a blend of wool with cotton and/or nylon, acrylic or other synthetics. This is the blend we use for most of our flannels. Beware of competitors offering “flannel” jerseys. This is a generic term that does NOT necessarily mean real baseball wool flannel. We have our baseball cloth specially made to the original 1950s specifications – a 50% wool/synthetic blend. Occasionally we use 100% wool on special solid colors. For team orders, cream and gray poly knit fabric is also available for those who want a vintage look, but in a contemporary fabric. THE CARE AND FEEDING OF YOUR FLANNEL JERSEYYour authentic flannel jersey should be loose enough to allow you to wear a t-shirt or EFF fungo shirt underneath. You should be able to raise your arms freely above your ahead, like a pitcher would. If the shirt is too tight, you need a larger size. The shirts can be worn tucked into your pants or hanging out, depending upon your stylistic preference. Your EFF flannel is made to last, so don’t be afraid to wear it. Play some ball in it. Get some dirt on it! Most of our authentic flannels can be thrown in the “Gentle” cycle of your washing machine with a little Woolite and hang-dried. The wool will soften and the shirt will not shrink. Use luke-warm water. DO NOT put your shirt in the machine dryer! This will put stress on the sewn felt letters because the wool fabric will shrink. Jerseys marked “Dry Clean Only” are 100% wool and must be dry cleaned. Remember, this fabric was designed to last a full 162-game season and beyond, so you shouldn’t have any difficulties. |
